Intermittent Catheterization

Intermittent Catheterization

Intermittent catheterization is the periodic, scheduled emptying of the bladder using a single-use catheter that is removed immediately afterward. A specialized nurse performs clean intermittent catheterization at home on a defined schedule and, where possible, teaches the patient or a family member to carry it out safely and independently.

Who It’s For

It is intended for people with neurogenic bladder, patients with urinary retention or incomplete bladder emptying, and anyone who has received a relevant instruction from their treating physician. It is suitable for bedbound patients, the elderly, and individuals who wish to gain autonomy in their own care at home.

What It Includes

  • Assessment & scheduling: Setting the catheterization schedule in coordination with the physician, according to the patient’s needs.
  • Performing the catheterization: Clean intermittent catheterization with sterile single-use materials and aseptic technique.
  • Teaching & follow-up: Guiding the patient or a family member in correct technique and points to watch for, with regular follow-up.

Safety & Procedure

The procedure is performed by a certified nurse with strict adherence to hygiene and aseptic technique, to help prevent infection and injury. The nurse monitors for any signs that require attention and promptly informs the treating physician, who defines the plan of care.
